Making it “Real”

  • This committee has one of the most important roles of the whole regatta after safety of the competitors
  • Our times determine the race times and ultimately medals along with providing qualifying information for future years
  • The timing of all boats MUST be captured. Back-up timing is also conducted, but the regatta relies on the computer timing technology for all timing
  • Views from the boathouses are beautiful, but you need to focus to ensure we meet our goal – timing for 100% of all competitors

Computer Timing – Overview

  • The Computer Timing committee and it’s volunteers are responsible for capturing the START, SPLIT, and FINISH times for all competitors that participate in the regatta.
  • Times are captured using computers and cameras at each of the “stations” on the race course.
  • The station names are:
    • Start – DeWolfe Boston University Boathouse
    • Riverside – Riverside Boat Club
    • Weld – Harvard University Radcliffe Weld Boathouse
    • CBC – Cambridge Boat Club
    • Finish – Trailer located at the race finish line
  • The computers are networked together and the HereNow Timing System collects the data from all of the stations, checks it for discrepancies, and posts the information to be viewed publicly.
  • Each station team is managed by a Station Lead who manages a group of approximately six to eight volunteers at the station
  • Volunteer responsibilities include, but are not limited to;
    • Set up of the timing station
    • Spotting and identifying boats on the course
    • Logging the order that boats go by the station
    • Capturing times with a camera connected to the computer
    • Marking boats (assigning times) on the computer
    • Cleaning up around the timing station
    • Packing up the timing station each night
