Riverside Split Timing Station

Riverside Boat Club

Riverside Boat Club (RBC)

Riverside Boat Club (RBC) is located at 796 Memorial Drive, Cambridge MA

  • Enter from the front door or go down the stairs and then go in the building and up to the second floor. The timing is located out on the balcony of the boat club. At the top of the stairs head Straight through the Erg Room and out to the Balcony. Avoid using the outside stairs if possible, they may not be in the best shape and can be dangerous in the dark. If the main front door is locked you can enter the boathouse though the side doors or from the dock.

The Riverside station is set up at the upstream end of the RBC porch. The other side (downstream) of the porch is usually the location of an Announcing Station. This is run by another HOCR committee and has it’s own volunteers as well. Be sure you are in the correct place, when lunch arrives they bring boxes for both teams and the right box goes to the right team (they should be marked). RBC members will also be using the porch. Politely limit them from the general vicinity of the timing station area. This has been agreed to by the RBC Board.

Although this is a split station, it is important that it be aligned using the short-course start marker on the far side of the river (set up by Course on Friday or Saturday).  Notify the NOC if you do not see a Split Marker. RBC station will become the Start station in the event that the race switches to Short Course (high wind or other issues in the Basin or at Start). This in NOT a common occurrence but it has happened.

It is very dark during the station setup and it is almost impossible to see the short course marker or anything clearly on the other side of the river. Please recheck the camera aim once there is more light.

This is how the station setup looks at Riverside: Note – Walking by the camera will cause it to shake, bluring the picture during capture, making identifying the boats much harder. Do not let people use the door behind the camera, to the outside stairs, if possible.

The internet connectivity is through a wireless antenna connection, (there is also back up DSL line provided by Verizon; the DSL jack is on the downstream end of the RBC porch. Use a long Cat 5 Network cable to connect to the wireless antenna. Only use the DSL if the wireless connection does not work. The only power is also on the downstream end of the porch as well. Use the long power extension cord to run from the outlets down stream to the timing station. Connect the UPS power supply to that and place it under the table. Make sure the switch is not in a place it can accidentally be stepped on and turned off.
